Pipe replacement to close lanes of southbound I-95 in Richmond this weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Two lanes of I-95 South near Lombardy Street will be closed beginning Friday, August 5 at approximately 11 p.m. due to a pipe replacement.

Only one southbound lane is open while the crews are working. The Virginia Department of Transportation says all lanes should reopen around midnight Monday.

Repairs are needed to replace a corrugated iron pipe that has collapsed under the highway. Crews will replace the metal pipe with a concrete pipe that is designed to withstand traffic and wear and tear over an extended period of time. According to VDOT, this replacement will also help alleviate recent flooding in the area, which occurs after heavy rains

VDOT says drivers can expect severe congestion and delays during the lockdown. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes such as I-295 and Route 288.

“Signs will be in place to warn traffic and suggest alternative routes,” VDOT said in a press release.
