Plumber hack unblocks drains quickly with ‘effective’ 70p kitchen item

According to the plumbers at Emergency Plumber London, Coke is an “effective” drain cleaner. As the Express reports, they claim: “Coke is a better cleaner than some chemicals for clearing clogged drains. It is a powerful solvent that can, over time, even dissolve a nail inserted into it.”

Cola soft drinks have a distinctive taste that people love due to the phosphoric acid content in them. Experts explain that the phosphoric acid contained in cola “inhibits the growth of mold and bacteria” in the sugary liquid.

Although phosphoric acid is an “effective drain cleaner,” it is not as toxic as it sounds. In fact, phosphoric acid occurs naturally in many foods – and cola happens to be one of them.

The plumbers explained that it can clear your clogged drain without damaging your pipes. To clean your drains, you should get a two-liter bottle of Coke and store it at room temperature for some time. Then pour it down the drain and let it bubble and caustic for about two hours before pouring hot water down the drain. It is important to note that the water must not be boiling.

If you follow these steps, the phosphoric acid should dissolve any debris causing clogs. It can also remove stubborn stains like limescale that your other cleaners struggle with, the experts say.

If the drain is still clogged, there is a chance that the phosphoric acid has not dissolved. To fix this, use a long piece of wire (such as a coat hanger) with a hooked end to unclog the drain.

Coke is cheap to buy in supermarkets such as Sainsbury's and Asda, where it retails for 70p.
