Two talented apprentice plumbers from Cornwall College St Austell are celebrating success at the prestigious World Skills Plumbing competition in Manchester.
Competing against the UK's best young talent, Elliot Julian secured an impressive second place, while Dillion Newton proudly came third, bringing pride not only to herself but also to her college and the wider Cornish community.
Elliot, employed by Ryan Nicholls Plumbing and Heating, reflected on his success and said: “I am so happy to have come second in such tough competition. It was an amazing experience to test my skills at this level and represent the college and my workplace on a national stage.”
Dillion, who is also completing his apprenticeship with Ryan Nicholls Plumbing and Heating, shared his excitement: “I couldn’t be happier with my work and my success, I’m so proud to have come third. The national competition was a worthwhile challenge, but the competition was tough and tested our knowledge and skills.”
The annual competition serves as a benchmark for outstanding professional skills. Elliot and Dillion have demonstrated remarkable technical competence, problem-solving skills and professionalism under pressure.
Dan Knight, curriculum area leader for construction and engineering, praised the students: “This is an incredible achievement for Elliot and Dillion. Their success is testament to their ability and commitment, and to the exceptional teaching and support they receive at Cornwall College. Achievements like these not only benefit the students, but also inspire their fellow students and strengthen the reputation of the university’s construction and engineering courses.”
Their outstanding achievements underline Cornwall College's high standards of education and highlight the value of skilled training in today's workforce.
For Steve Jarvis, director of the college's training program, “this success reflects the passion and talent of the region.”
He added: “Competing at this level and winning such prestigious awards demonstrates the strength of our training programs and the quality of learners we are privileged to support.”
