Sloan, a manufacturer of commercial plumbing systems, has received certification for the Water Council's WAVE program, according to a Water Council news release.
WAVE program verification is awarded independently by SCS Global Services, a sustainability verification company, and indicates that a company has implemented best practices to improve water stewardship.
In 2022, Sloan was among the first companies to join the Water Council's WAVE program, an initiative designed to help companies improve, report and verify their progress on water stewardship. Kirk Allen, co-president and CEO of Sloan, is a longtime member of the Water Council Board of Directors.
“Protecting our planet’s most valuable resource is a fundamental responsibility of our company, and we take this commitment very seriously,” said Paul Sambanis, vice president of sustainability at Sloan. “Sloan is proud to receive certification for the Water Council’s WAVE program. It is an exciting opportunity to lead by example and proactively address water issues alongside our colleagues.”
Sloan focuses its water efforts in three key areas: developing innovative and water-efficient products, monitoring and conserving water across its operations, and promoting water stewardship among its stakeholders. An example of these efforts is Sloan's Foundry, where evaporative condenser cooling towers are installed to use recycled water and approximately 18 million gallons of water are recovered each year.
Sloan's WAVE Verification Certificate from SCS Global Services required completion of a six-step process that included:
- Promote Sloan's membership on the Water Council
- Conduct a company-wide review of current practices that impact how water is sourced, used and discharged from direct operations and/or used in the value chain
- Conduct a watershed risk assessment of key sites under direct operational control and/or sites from which key inputs are sourced and services are provided
- Prioritize locations where water-related risks are highest and can be mitigated through the direct application of water management practices; and/or prioritization of measures in the value chain
- Ensuring approval of a company-wide water management statement at the highest level
- Communicate an enterprise-wide action plan, resulting goals, and timeline for implementation of water management projects and/or practices in high-risk locations or within the value chain
“By following the six-step process above, Sloan has demonstrated that it strategically prioritizes water-related actions where they matter most,” said Matt Howard, vice president of water management at the Water Council. “We are pleased to see Sloan take the next step in its water stewardship journey.”
By 2024, Sloan plans to expand its water stewardship and sustainability progress in the following ways:
- Improving on-site water metering by installing sub-meters in areas of high water use
- Ensure all sites have current and proper documentation for environmental, water and stormwater management systems
- Participate in the WASH4WORK pledge as a commitment to implementing access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene in the workplace and throughout Sloan's value chain
- Implement water reuse policies to reduce on-site water consumption
- Participate in activities and collaborate with local stakeholders to maintain and improve local water quality
- Highlighting water reuse and other practices on its website and other public platforms
