Raymark Plumbing and Sewer Encourages Public to Adopt a Storm Drain

Seattle, WA – As Seattle’s cold and wet weather persists, more rain drains are clogged with leaves and all kinds of debris. An emergency plumbing provider in Seattle, WA is here to educate their community about the Adopt-a-Drain program and encourage residents to keep local waterways clean.

Storm drains flow towards streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans and act as passageways for trash and organic pollutants, not to mention the fact that clogged rain drains can cause local flooding. That’s why six Puget Sound cities (Duvall, Maple Valley, Newcastle, Redmond, Sammamish, Seattle and Tacoma) have teamed up to launch the Adopt-a-Drain program earlier this year.

To adopt a drain, individuals can visit adopt-a-drain.org, select an available drain in their neighborhood, and then spend at least 15 minutes removing debris on and around the drain grate twice a month. It is not recommended to remove the grate yourself, and the program will prompt people to contact city (or county) staff if the drain is indeed clogged.

Seattle’s Adopt-A-Drain Manager Susan Harper has this to say to the community: “By managing your local rainwater runoff, you can help prevent local flooding and reduce debris in our drainage systems and waterways. This helps you, your neighbors, your utility company and our local waters. “

For the first year of the program, participating cities of Puget Sound have a target of 1,000 adopters. Since its inception, nearly 500 users have signed up, meaning it has accepted over 850 drains and collected nearly 3,000 pounds of rubble to date.
