Readers’ Choice 2022 home & garden – Baltimore Sun

Baltimore Sun readers voted on what’s best in the area, from antiques to veterinary surgeries. This year’s winners include individuals and companies that have been recognized for outstanding service and customer satisfaction over the past year. Several companies stood out from the crowd despite the pandemic-induced drop in trade.

The winners of the readers’ poll were chosen by the readers in May.

Farms with valley views

Carrie Engel began working at Valley View Farms in 1972 at the age of 16 as a part-time employee in the produce and crops division.

Since then, Engel, now 66 and a greenhouse manager, has been with the company for over 45 years and said that while a lot has changed over the last four decades, the connections with her customers have remained the same.

“I mean, [the relationship with customers] means the world, so we’re still in business,” Engel said. “You see what has happened to so many companies over the years and we still have a very solid foundation. And it’s the connection between our people and those customers, and I think we all feel like we’re all working towards the same goal.

According to Engel, that goal is to provide customers with the resources they need to garden and connect. While the company has felt the weight of the COVID-19 pandemic on many fronts, including in relation to its supply chain, Engel said the pandemic sparked in many people the love of gardening that led them to Valley View.

“I think it makes that connection to nature for people and helps them with this whole COVID thing,” Engel said. “They realized that tens of millions of people are drawn to gardening because it gets them outside and it gets them involved with different projects with their families, and we want to keep that going and build on that.”

Despite the challenges, Engel credited her ownership as part of her continued success. As she explained, the farm was founded in 1962 by brothers William “Billy” and John “Punky” Foard. Sixty years later, the farm remains in the family, with Billy Foard’s son Andy Foard now running the business.

Many Valley View employees have been with the company since it was originally owned, Engel said. She believes Andy Foard’s involvement is vital to the business.

“With COVID, we have all taken on the challenge together of figuring out what we are going to do not only with the employees but also with the company itself,” said Engel. “And just knowing that the owner is here every day, especially at peak times, and has everything under control, I think is very important.”

Aside from the pandemic, Engel said the farm’s presence in the community has helped cement its customer base. She particularly noted that coming to Valley View for the holidays has become a tradition for many families.

“We appreciate Baltimore and everyone we have here,” Engel said.
