Sen. Baldwin supports new initiative to accelerate lead pipe removal in Wis.

WASHINGTON, DC (WEAU) — US Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) is supporting a new initiative to expedite the removal of lead pipes in Wis.

According to a media release from Senator Baldwin, Senator Baldwin welcomed an announcement Friday that Wis. Assistance will be received to expedite the removal of lead piping through a new program that will help communities receive their fair share of federal funding for safe drinking water under the Baldwin-backed Bipartisan Infrastructure Act.

The Biden-Harris administration’s Lead Service Line Replacement Accelerators will provide targeted technical assistance services to help underserved communities access funds from the bipartisan Infrastructure Act to replace lead pipes that pose a risk to the health of children and families , according to Senator Baldwin’s press release.

According to Senator Baldwin’s media release, the Environmental Protection Agency and four state partners will work with 40 communities in 2023 to remove existing roadblocks and accelerate progress toward lead service line identification and replacement.

“No amount of lead is safe in drinking water, especially not for children. I voted in favor of the bipartisan infrastructure bill because it makes long-overdue investments in our state’s drinking water infrastructure, with a focus on investments in communities that have been left behind for too long,” Senator Baldwin said. “This collaboration will help Wisconsin communities access the resources I brought home to expedite the removal of lead utility lines and ensure every Wisconsinite has access to safe drinking water.”

“Every Wisconsin resident deserves access to safe, clean drinking water. We have worked since day one of my term to address the lead crisis and other water quality issues affecting our state—from declaring 2019 the Year of Safe Drinking Water to our ongoing work with the EPA to replace lead supply lines in our state. ‘ said Gov. Tony Evers. “The Biden administration and the EPA have been critical partners in this effort. I look forward to continuing our work together to ensure Wisconsinite residents can trust the water that comes out of their faucets.”
