Oneida County has been identified by New York State as a geographic focus area where the impacts of cesspool and septic tank discharges on groundwater and surface water must be reduced. The New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation has provided $200,000 to Oneida County to relieve properties in focus areas. These properties are eligible to receive funds to repair or replace septic tanks.
Properties located within 250 feet of the following bodies of water may be eligible:
- Barker/Eli Creek and tributaries
- Beaver Brook and tributaries
- Big Brook and tributaries
- Delta Reservoir
- East Br Fish Creek, Lower, small tributary
- East Br Fish Creek, upper, small tributary
- East Branch of the Mohawk River and tributaries
- Echo Lake/North Pond
- Fall Brook and tributaries
- Florence Creek, headwaters and tributaries
- Hinckley Reservoir
- Lansing Kill and tributaries
- Smaller tributaries to Hinckley Reservoir
- Mohawk River, upper reaches and smaller tributaries
- Mohawk River, headwaters and tributaries
- Dam of Rome
- Stringer Brook and tributaries
- Inflow of the Delta Reservoir
- Tributary of Sauquoit Creek, upper reaches
- Upper Murray Brook, tributary of Oneida Lake
- White Creek, headwaters and tributaries

Applicants must provide sufficient information about the condition of the treatment plant and the extent and cost of the proposed repair or replacement. The estimate should include the cost of engineering/design services, time and material costs.
Replacement and/or upgrade of all septic systems must be approved by the Oneida County Health Department, must be designed by a licensed engineer, and requires approval of local building codes.
Award: The property owner will be reimbursed up to 50% of the eligible costs for eligible septic tank projects, up to a maximum of $10,000.
The program will end on March 31, 2027, or until the full $200,000 is awarded.
