Housing, Local Government and Heritage Minister Darragh O'Brien has announced an increase in subsidies for septic tanks. The maximum payments will be increased by 140% – from €5,000 to €12,000.
More households in Wexford County are now eligible for the grant. The Minister also announced that the requirement that the septic tank be registered with the local authority before February 1, 2013 will be removed.
The changes, which come into effect on January 1, 2024, mean more households will be eligible for the grants and will be supported to upgrade or replace their tank by a greatly increased grant.
Domestic wastewater treatment plants collect, treat and discharge wastewater from households that are not connected to the public sewer system. They must be registered with local authorities who can inspect them to ensure they do not pose a risk to the public and the environment.
Grants of up to €5,000 are currently available to repair, modernize or replace a septic tank, provided it was registered before February 1, 2013. The maximum grant will be increased by 140% to €12,000 and will be available to all eligible septic tank owners.
