Medicine cabinet organizers

This is the best organizer we've found for storing toiletries of all sizes. Its narrower dimensions leave more space for storing other bulky items on a medicine cabinet shelf.

Medicine cabinet organizers are particularly useful for storing things like mascara, thermometers, and other tubes upright, minimizing the space they would take up horizontally. After testing four of them, we liked the iDesign Linus Medicine Cabinet Organizer. It features the smallest compartments for vertical storage and, at just 7 inches wide, does not take up the entire width of most medicine cabinets. The Linus's four vertical storage compartments easily fit items like mascara, but the wider compartments can fit a handful of cotton swabs or a box of dental floss. And the clear plastic makes it easy to see what you've stored and easy to clean.

If you have a larger medicine cabinet, we also liked the 12-inch-wide iDesign Med+ Makeup and Medicine Cabinet Multi-Level Organizer because it offers plenty of vertical storage, easily accommodates dental floss and band-aids, and has some room in the large center compartment Space for cotton balls or cotton pads. If you want to store your cotton balls in a small drawer, consider the iDesign Linus Cabinet Organizer with Drawer.

Drawer organizers

Top choice

Although these are kitchen drawer organizers, we like their height and durability for bathroom drawers.

After testing three types of drawer organizers, we concluded that the iDesign Kitchen Drawer Organizer 6-Piece Set was the best because it was more durable and came in more versatile sizes than the competition. It also has non-slip rubber feet to keep the compartments stable.

Two different organizers bent in half show differences in durability. The iDesign kitchen drawer organizer (left) performed best in our compression load tests, unlike the Rubbermaid organizer (right), which felt thin and folded in half easily. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

The iDesign kitchen compartments are made of thick plastic that does not bend or break easily. At 2 inches deep, these compartments are also shallow enough to fit in most drawers. Not only is the iDesign more durable and a better size than others we've tested, but these organizers also come in a six-pack, making them the perfect starter set.

Also great

An organizer made from thicker plastic but still slim enough to fit in most drawers. It is a better choice if you want to manually select your containers for a perfect fit.

If you want to purchase individual containers that fit perfectly in your drawers, we recommend the iDesign Linus flat drawer organizers. These are made of thicker, sturdier plastic than the other iDesign containers, but have the same 2-inch depth (ideal for fitting into shallow drawers). Even though we didn't bring them to test, we tested them at The Container Store and are confident in recommending them. They're the same style as the 3-inch-deep Linus organizers we tested and liked (but we thought they were too deep for most bathroom drawers).

Under-table organizer

Top choice

These are the best constructed shelves we have found. They won't tip over (like other sets) and have the option to screw the frame into your vanity for extra stability.

Under-counter organizers make optimal use of the vertical space that would otherwise be taken up by your pipes. Of the six drawer sets we tested, The Container Store's Silver 2-Drawer Mesh Organizer is best suited for installation under a small bathroom vanity due to its narrow but tall size and all-around superior durability. It requires no assembly, features a durable mesh, and fits larger items better than the competition. A locking mechanism holds the top drawer in place, and because the frame is a single device, there's no risk of the top falling off like we've seen with competing shelves. The silver 2-drawer organizer also comes with four holes in the base so it can be screwed into the bottom of a vanity for further stability (a feature none of the other drawers we looked at had). The space between the bottom and top drawers is slightly larger, making it easier to store taller bottles underneath or on top.

These grooved plastic drawers are suitable for smaller rooms, although they are slightly less stable.

Fowooyeen bathroom closet organizer is cheap but very effective. It has non-slip feet to ensure stability, and the removable drawer dividers allow you to customize it to suit your needs. At just 7.5 inches wide, 9 inches high, and 12 inches deep, it's slightly smaller than The Container Store's drawer option above and also about half the price. However, it cannot be anchored to the base and requires (simple) assembly.

Also great

This door mounted caddy is the best solution we've found for storing a hair dryer. It also offers a little more space for toiletries or cleaning supplies.

The Umbra Hide 'n' Sink Under Sink Caddy slides directly over the door of a vanity cabinet, leaving free floor space to store other items. It has a unique slot for storing a hairdryer, something none of the other bathroom accessories we looked at were explicitly designed for, but it's also a good solution for storing sponges or other cleaning supplies. The metal hooks protrude slightly at the top of a vanity door even when it is closed, which may bother some people.
