Southwest Florida Online – Sunday Morning News: $500,000 Sewer Line Repair In Port LaBelle Started This Week

LABEL, FL. – The Port LaBelle Utility System has received a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to pay for parts of a new sewer line from the pumping station west of the Port LaBelle Inn.

The total cost of the project is $ 500,680 and replaces the original cast iron pipe in portions of the sewer gravity conduit system. The line serves the Port LaBelle Inn and the condos and apartments in the area along the Hendry / Glades county line. The part is now being replaced in Glades County.

In 2018, PLUS commissioned National Water Main Cleaning Co. to conduct a study of sewage pipes across Port LaBelle using a remote camera and high-pressure water to flush the cast iron pipes for leaks.

The major project started this Monday and is expected to last four months. No local residents are expected to be affected by the project, other than construction crews and equipment who travel Oxbow Drive daily and travel to the site in a fenced cow pasture at the west end of Oxbow Drive.

The Port LaBelle Inn reportedly had sewer problems a few years ago, possibly related to the old cast iron piping system in the area.

Strickler Bros. Underground Inc. and Tetra Tech’s CIE Services are the project contractors.

Editor’s Note: While researching this project, the Department of Environmental Protection, South District did not respond to a call.

The Glades County Administrator’s office gave no light on the project. The Hendry County Administrator’s office also refused to confirm that they knew about the project.

Calls to the Hendry and Glades Counties building authorities produced similar results, claiming they had no knowledge.

A call to the Hendry engineer’s office was not answered. The Port LaBelle Utility Office refused to release any information and referred us to Emily Hunter, Hendry County’s communications coordinator, who emailed all of our questions a day later.
