Sparkman water issues continue for some residents

SPARKMAN, Ark. – Many of the people at Sparkman said they are still seeing the long-lasting effects of the historic winter storm that came through.

Christie Godvia, a woman who lives in Sparkman, said she still has no water.

“Everything frozen so I couldn’t get my meter,” said Godvia. “So … when it all started to melt, my water heater and pipe exploded two weeks later.”

Godvia said she was forced to use the toilet elsewhere and had to fix all of her pipes throughout the house.

Lisa Buck is another Sparkman resident who is one of the few in town with hot water.

Sparkman is still grappling with water issues, some for more than a week without water

“Friends, family to shower and the laundry mat, because it’s almost like you can’t do anything without water, especially if you have kids,” said Lisa Buck, who lives in Sparkman.

Buck said she also fixes pipes in her house and she finally has something hot.

“We could find pieces in Hot Springs because Arkadelphia – the closest place to us is out of it all,” said Buck.

Mayor Rickey Craig said the city is still grappling with low pressure issues and there are some leaks that have yet to be fixed.

The city was able to lift the boiling water advice on Wednesday. Some people still don’t believe the water is safe, so boil it or drink bottled water first

Although the pressure is still low, the people who live in the city are expressing what it means to them.

“I feel like human, but I also think about how vulnerable we are every day,” said Joe Givvens. “It occurred to me very clearly that water is the same for our lives as air flowing through our lungs and blood flowing through our veins.”

The mayor said they are doing everything they can to fix things. Right now her focus is on figuring out where all the leaks are so they can be fixed. It can take up to 30 days for things to return to normal.
