SPCA field officer saves dog from drowning in an open sewerage septic tank

Durban – A Kloof and Highway SPCA field officer rescued a dog from drowning in an open sewerage septic tank.

Last week the Kloof and Highway SPCA reported that field officer Doctor Mthombeni had responded to a call in the Hammarsdale area where guards at a large factory had seen a dog in one of their open sewerage septic tanks.

“Upon arrival, field officer Mthombeni realized that the top layer of the septic tank was just able to support the weight of the dog and any additional weight or pressure could result in the dog drowning if it fell further into the sewerage,” the SPCA said .

“The dog was becoming tired and stressed whilst moving around trying to get out.”

The SPCA said the field officer had to think fast and immediately used some rope and his control pole to support the weight of the dog, thankfully this was just in time as the top layer of the sewerage broke and the dog was then covered in sewerage as it fell further down.

“Once the dog was safely out of the tank, field officer Mthombeni slowly and carefully guided and helped the dog to the side where he could reach her and pull her out of the tank,” the SPCA said.

“He immediately washed her down until she was clean again and brought her into the Kloof and Highway SPCA clinic for a check.”

“Although scared, this sweet Africanis has settled in and is ever grateful to her rescuer,” the SPCA concluded.

In January, Mthombeni saved a goat from drowning in a man-made ravine in a township west of Durban.

The goat had fallen into a deep man-made ravine filled with mud and thick sludge.

Mthombeni immediately went to help the weak goat. He knew that he only had minutes to spare when he managed to rescue the goat from the deep ravine.

Mthombeni and the goat were exhausted and relieved. The goat was washed down and cleaned so that it could be checked for any injuries.
