Springfield Water and Sewer Commission issues scam warning

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission is warning residents that scammers are posing as commission workers to gain illegal access to property, collect illegal payments, or conduct a sales pitch.

Customers are cautioned that commission employees almost never arrive at home unannounced to carry out work. Here are some important tips for customers to keep their families and property safe:

· In almost all cases, the Commission’s work is carried out by agreement. In rare cases, Commission staff may visit a property unannounced due to a water or sewer emergency.

· Do not allow anyone claiming to be a commissioner into your home or property without first checking their official Springfield Water and Sewer Commission ID. There is a number on the back of the cards that you can call to verify employment with the commission.

· Commission staff drive blue or white vehicles with official blue license plates and the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission seal affixed to the vehicle.

· You can call 413-452-1309 to verify that there is an employee working at SWSC and / or you can call Customer Service at 413-310-3501 during normal business hours from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to verify that the employee is supposed to carry out work in your house.

· Payments and other account transactions are only accepted by mail or online. Commission staff never ask for payments or money transfers while at a customer’s home.

· If you suspect that someone is illegally posing as a Commission employee, do not allow them access to your property and contact your police department.

The commission has also received reports that new homeowners in Springfield may be affected by this recent water and sanitation fraud. New Springfield homeowners who may not be familiar with the Commission and its water and sanitation services and repairs should visit the Commission website, call 413-452-1300 or email info @ waterandsewer. org contact the customer service department if you have any questions about your water and wastewater account.
