State delivers grants for lead pipe replacement in Hudson Valley

ALBANY – The state has announced grants for communities to improve their drinking water infrastructure by identifying and replacing leading service lines.

The Village of Catskill will receive $106,545 from the federal bipartisan infrastructure bill.

The state Department of Health is also using money from the same fund to provide engineering and technical assistance in identifying key service lines.

The state hired engineering firms to provide assistance, including inventory planning, records review, outreach and other assistance to Kinderhook, Millerton and New Paltz.

“There is no safe level of lead exposure,” said Caitlin Ferrante, conservation manager for the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter. “Even at low levels, lead exposure can be extremely dangerous for all people, especially developing children and pregnant women.”
