Street near Costco partially closes for emergency sanitary sewer repair

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – West Michigan Avenue is partially closed due to emergency sewer work, the City of Kalamazoo announced in a news release Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The city was notified shortly after noon on Monday, Dec. 16, of a sewage overflow in the 5100 block of West Michigan Avenue, which is between Drake Road and Century Avenue. The spill was stopped about 40 minutes later.

An estimated 500 gallons of material will be drained from the manhole. To restore service, a bypass pump has been installed while additional work is being carried out to repair the sewer.

The westbound lane will remain closed until Monday, December 23rd. The work zone is north of Costco Wholesale and east of US 131. The eastbound lane on West Michigan Avenue remains open.

Motorists will be detoured to Stadium Drive and 11th Street.

The sidewalks remain open and can be used by cyclists.

Anyone who drove through standing, steaming water on the roadway in the affected area between 12:05 and 12:45 p.m. should wash their vehicle, health authorities said. Anyone who comes into contact with wastewater should avoid spreading and tracking; Thoroughly clean and disinfect shoes, clothing and skin.

As required by law, Kalamazoo Water Reclamation Plant staff notified the Michigan Department of Environmental, Great Lakes and Energy and county health officials of the spill.
