TROY, NY – Mayor Carmella Mantello recently announced the first phase of a citywide program to pave streets, replace lead pipes and encourage residents and businesses to get involved.

“A resurfacing of Troy’s streets as part of the Quality of Life Action Task Force’s Phase 1 Troy Paving Program is long overdue,” Mantello said in a news release announcing the move. “If your road is not on the schedule, don’t worry. As the city works with National Grid and various city departments, the staggered schedule will allow room for adjustments.”

All roads included in the paving plan will be milled and paved, the release states. Milling involves removing the top layer of the roadway in preparation for laying the new asphalt.

This ensures good grip and prevents potholes. In addition to milling and paving, the city has already begun upgrading the ADA curb ramps to make them more accessible. Additional sidewalk work will also be performed on Campbell Avenue.

“No parent should be afraid of what comes out of their faucet,” Mantello said in the news release, “which is why we are launching our lead pipe replacement program to replace all lead pipes over the next four years.”

The lead pipe replacement program will help the city reach lead pipe hotspots. This program coincides with street paving and property owners will be notified prior to replacement. In keeping with the first phase of road construction, the hotspots listed will be addressed.

As city officials and various departments work hard to make Troy safer and cleaner, Mantello encourages the public to get involved, the release said. Pitch In Troy is an initiative that encourages residents to do their part to beautify and revitalize neighborhoods.

“Whether it’s picking up trash or cleaning up front yards, no action is too big or too small,” the press release says. “Improving our city is a collective effort and we need the cooperation of our residents and businesses.”

Please note that lead pipe replacement and road paving schedules are subject to change, officials said. The schedule depends on coordination with the National Grid and various city departments.
