SunLive – Young plumbers prep for the ultimate test

Plumbers from across the Bay Of Plenty and the Central Plateau are preparing for the regional finals of the Young Plumber of the Year competition.

On August 17th, 10 plumbers will demonstrate their skills to represent their region in the national finals, later this year on October 6th.

To qualify, participants must be under 31 years of age and work or be trained as plumbers.

In the regional competition, installers take a written test and a demanding series of practical skill tests, which are assessed by a judge.

Young plumbers from Gisborne, Taupo, Rotorua, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, Tauranga and Whakatane will compete against each other who have already proven themselves in local industry competitions.

Steve Langton, Regional Director of Plumbing World Central, looks forward to hosting the competition.

“It’s exciting to play a role in supporting the plumbing industry in New Zealand. There is a growing demand for more artisans across the region and I hope this event will inspire more young Kiwis to consider careers in the plumbing field.

“The Young Plumber of the Year competition is a great opportunity to encourage our young plumbers to get involved and demonstrate all of the practical and theoretical know-how that plumbers need.”

With a multitude of Kiwis pouring their travel money into home renovations over the past year, the demand for plumbers will reach new heights.

Recent research has shown that approximately 2,900 more skilled plumbers are needed to meet current New Zealand needs.

The Young Plumber of the Year competition is Plumbing World’s pioneering initiative that aims to attract more young talent to the craft.

The national competition hosted by Plumbing World New Zealand, which is now in its fourth year, continues support young and emerging talent in the New Zealand retail industry.
