Do you live in a home that uses a domestic wastewater treatment system (e.g. septic tank or packaged treatment system) for wastewater disposal? Then you are cordially invited to take part in a 10-15 minute (anonymized) survey on the topic of system management.
The recently launched survey aims to examine current household practices, awareness levels, opinions and preferences regarding the operation of domestic wastewater treatment systems in Ireland.
The survey is part of the EPA-funded research project REMARC (Remediation of Faulty Septic Tanks: A Mixed Methods Approach to Environmental Risk Communication). The project involves researchers from UCD, UCC and TU Dublin and aims to support system management from both the top down (government) and bottom up (households).
There is increasing recognition at the national level that current policies and supports related to system maintenance may require revision.
The 2024 Water Action Plan published by the Ministry of Housing, Local Government and Heritage recognizes the need for greater top-down engagement with users of domestic wastewater treatment systems to recognize their experiences and opinions in system management.
Why participate?
Participating in the REMARC survey provides you with the opportunity to anonymously report on your household system management experiences and learn what motivates or discourages you from maintaining or upgrading your system.
Their views will provide a basis for future policy changes and the design of support measures for system users across the country.
The survey is hosted on SurveyMonkey and takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. All survey data is confidential and anonymous. When the results are published, no participant data will be passed on to third parties or made identifiable.
If you are over 18 years old and are interested in sharing your experiences and views on managing your septic tank/packaged treatment system, the REMARC team warmly invites you to participate. Your time and effort is immensely appreciated!
