The perfect trailer

While minimalist metal fittings and sharp-edged industrial shapes have dominated many of our kitchens for years, softer shapes and playful patterns can add a brighter look and instant character.

The original design for this curvy trailer turned out to be so technically complex that British manufacturer Original BTC put it on hold in 2001. Fortunately, after two decades of research and development, it’s back this spring and feels extremely fresh with its minimal profile and unglazed bone china hue.

This airy lamp, which Frederik Kurzweg designed for Normann Copenhagen, consists of three nested sheets of white perforated steel. Since each curved layer is rotated 180 degrees relative to the others, the shape appears to change as you move around your kitchen, dining room, or bar.

If you’ve been curious about mycelium – the fibrous strands in mushrooms that have been used to grow sustainable building materials recently – but hesitate to build your next house out of mushrooms, take the first step with this fully biodegradable pendant shade from designer Danielle Trofe. The Cup Light has a spongy texture (its hue is created by binding the mycelium with a hemp substrate) that gives it a soft, organic sheen.

The Guatemala-born Milanese industrial designer Luis Arrivillaga relied on Victor Vasarely’s trippy Op Art when designing the striking Dana pendant for Souda. The umbrella’s two black wire hemispheres can be positioned as desired to allow infinite patterns.

Foscarini’s latest pendant, designed by architects Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, has a dimple hue and shades that are reminiscent of natural elements. It feels like it has been plucked from a very fancy asteroid belt. Choose between colored petrol, burnished gold or transparent surfaces that match your decor.

BuzziCone is a minimalist and elegant lighting design that is available in three different shapes and a range of pastel colors. The lampshade is made with the BuzziFelt fabric developed by BuzziSpace, which has acoustic properties. Therefore, the design not only illuminates the surrounding area, but also acts as a noise control means, making it unique and useful for our ever-changing contract and residential environments. Hang one or group a few together to make different design statements.

With this ash shelf from Ferm Living, which consists of wall art and a storage system in equal parts, you can store important kitchen utensils without endangering the valuable counter. Use the various pens, strips, and pouches to store or show off cookbooks, tools, and tchotchkes.

In a small space, keeping smoke and odors under control is important, and this slim Dacor hood does the job with a slim profile. It’s designed to vent air quietly and efficiently, and it can turn on automatically as soon as you light a burner.

Samsung’s new range of refrigerators promises to be customizable in both color and configuration. The 24-inch version (shown here in white and navy) can be toggled between fridge and freezer mode later in the spring, and the door can hang on either side.

A tiny kitchen still has room for amenities, and with this sleek Bosch dishwasher, the dishes don’t need to be hand washed. The ultra-quiet device is only 18 inches wide and has an optional third rack for setting the capacity.

The compact espresso machine from De’Longhi offers a barista repertoire of functions on a shelf space of less than 10 inches. At the push of a button, you can choose between 18 freshly ground, perfectly frothed coffee beverages.

Counter-statements

If endless stainless steel feels a bit institutional, try a pop of color to add personality to your kitchen. It’s even better if it comes from an unexpected location, like an accessory that you don’t want to hide in a closet.

With these new raised ceramic bowls from Vessel USA, you can transform the simplest worktop into a tableau worth living in. We like this sleek version in mellow yellow, but it’s also available in a more matte white.

This bead-like little jar from Brooklyn’s Light + Ladder (led by RISD alumna Farrah Sit) can hold jewelry of your choice. However, we also find it food-safe and transform Quotidian supplies such as salt, spices or even avocados into bizarre surprises.

The roots of the Memphis Group by designer George Sowden can be seen in his charming new kettle for Hay with its playful color palette and lines. And even though it boils water in the blink of an eye (a liter takes five minutes), you’ll never want to put it away – not even after tea is up.

KitchenAid’s popular stand mixer, once a must-have in wedding registers, now has a portable counterpart in this handy cordless version. The flat end allows you to set it aside during the recipe without the need for a spoon rest or countertop balancing act.

The father-son industrial design team Alberto and Francesco Meda presented a slim line of lights with Zucchetti last year. With its slim profile (available in versions from gold to matt black), the basin mixer is a show stopper.

Brizo’s entire Kintsu line may have been recognized for its elegant interplay of curves and edges, but the real star of the collection – let’s face it – is the solid brass tub filler. Available in a variety of styles, it can even be tricked into having a dip at the end of the day with its own wine glass holder (sold separately).

When it comes to your shower, good design shouldn’t go down the drain. Case in point: the geometric brass drain grids designed by interior designer Christopher Grubb for California Faucets.

The Milanese designers Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez bring a touch of color to your washbasin with Nice, their new faucet collection for Fantini. The translucent resin buttons take on candy-like hues from a thin strip of color at the base. Options include green, red, and turquoise (shown here). The elegant spout is available in chrome or matt black.

It’s the holy grail of kitchen accessories: a rug that is easy to clean to use on the sink, but looks good enough to be displayed in any room. Here are some of our favorite floor coverings that both check boxes.
