To fix the problem, you must first turn off the water to prevent leaks or flooding, and then investigate what is causing the problem.

Common causes of a running toilet are a worn flapper valve, a defective fill valve or a leaky flush valve.

Mr Emergency recommends starting with the flap.

“The toilet float seals the cistern and toilet bowl. Check that the float is sealing properly. It may be encrusted with years of buildup,” the plumbers said. in a guide to repairing a running toilet.

You'll need to either clean it or replace it, but if that doesn't solve the problem, it's time to check the water level.

“Turn on the water supply and allow the cistern to fill. This will help you determine the water level and whether it is too high. The water level will vary from toilet to toilet, but should be between 2.5 cm and 4 cm below the top of the overflow pipe.”

To fix a high water level, the float needs to be lowered, but it could also be damaged and need to be replaced, so check that as well.

If not, the next thing you should check is the fill valve. It may need cleaning or replacing. Mr Emergency has a handy tip for buying the right valve.

“We recommend taking the old valve with you as a reference for the new purchase.”

If you are unsure how to repair these parts or the problem persists, you will need to call a plumber.
