“Trough Sinks” Are a Big Trend, but Are They Practical?

If you're unfamiliar with tub sinks, think of a long (sometimes narrower) spa-like basin design, usually with two faucets to accommodate more than one person. They typically take up most (if not all) of the bathroom countertop, leaving you with a spacious sink.

In recent years, this type of washbasin has become very popular and impresses with its unique, minimalist design and practical functionality. However, if you are considering installing such a device in your bathroom, it is important to weigh the pros and cons to determine whether it is the right choice for your space.

There are several important aspects to consider, from installation and plumbing to space utilization and ease of use. Read on to learn the essentials before you make the purchase.

What are the advantages of trough sinks?

1. Practicality

Trough sinks offer plenty of space and are therefore ideal for shared bathrooms and rooms where several people need to use the sink at the same time. They offer enough space to give each person their own area.

Imagine a couple sharing the sink for morning and bedtime routines – no more waiting for the other to finish before starting your own personal daily routine.

“We love sinks in the bathroom, especially in the powder room or children's bathroom.” “It's fun to upgrade a bathroom and make washing your hands more fun,” says Liz Goldberg, founder and creative director of Carolynleona. “We used a sink with two faucets in the powder room for a busy family with young twins, the kids. Everyone loves having their own faucet to wash their hands at the same time!”

2. Aesthetics

Tub sinks often appear more minimalistic because they follow the outline of the bathroom vanity. However, there is a tub sink for every type of bathroom, and the elegance of a tub sink can make a real statement.

“Because the style is so versatile, they can enhance the overall aesthetic of the room,” says Nina Lichtenstein, founder of Nina Lichtenstein Custom Home Design. Available in different materials and finishes such as porcelain, stainless steel, wood or concrete: “This versatility allows you to choose a sink that matches the style and color scheme of your bathroom,” says Nina.

3. Maintenance

With a continuous basin and a single drain, trough sinks allow for efficient water drainage and the depth of the basin also helps reduce the risk of splashing, especially when used by multiple people at the same time. Additionally, the sink's simple design with fewer nooks and crannies makes cleaning a breeze, making it ideal for a low-maintenance bathroom.

What are the disadvantages?

1. Installation

Installing and maintaining plumbing for a kitchen sink can be more complex compared to traditional single or double sinks. “For optimal performance, proper drainage and water supply connections are critical,” says Nina. Consider this if you are wondering about the installation process.

2. Limited space and storage

Regardless of the seamless design, the longer length of a tub sink can limit bathroom countertop space for other essentials like toiletries or decorative items. Unless you opt for an integrated vanity design, this sink design also typically doesn't offer bathroom cabinets or drawers underneath, so this can be quite a disadvantage in smaller bathrooms and can mean the design is a no-go in terms of space and storage is.

3. Costs

Typically, the installation of this pool design can be more complex than a standard pool, cost more, and often require additional work on custom cabinets and adjustments. Additionally, these designs tend to be created for high-end projects, so it can be difficult to find good products at a lower price.

Interior designer Tineke Triggs also warns: “The exposed front can be damaged by frequent use. So choose your materials accordingly.”

So are trough sinks a good idea?

Aside from plumbing, storage and maintenance, you need to think about the overall bathroom layout and users' personal preferences in terms of design and functionality. “Trough sinks can be an excellent choice for those looking for a modern and functional alternative to traditional sinks. “However, it’s important to carefully weigh the pros and cons to make sure they meet your specific needs and preferences,” says Nina.

With smart planning and consideration, a tub sink can certainly transform your bathroom into a stylish and efficient space that can meet the needs of everyday life and serve all users in the right way.
