Urgent pipe replacement coming to U.S. 19/23 | News

CLYDE – A deep pipe failure under the eastbound lanes on US 19/23 between Clyde and Canton near Crawford Memorial Gardens will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction for about a month.

The NC Department of Transportation has moved both directions of traffic on the existing lanes in a westerly direction into a single-lane pattern. Speed limits have been reduced and orange markings separate traffic, increasing the need for drivers to remain vigilant.

The NCDOT engineers are working to develop and award an emergency repair contract to fix the problem as soon as possible.

The engineers expect construction to begin next week and operations to be completed within a month. A contract team will drill a new drainage pipe under the highway using a trenchless installation method and exit the failed old pipe by filling it with concrete.

Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, avoid distractions and obey all signs when driving in work areas like this.
