W.A.M.Y. accepting applications for Urgent Home Repair Program | Community

HIGHLANDS – WAMY Community Action announced that it is accepting applications for their urgent home repair program.

Funded by the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, the Urgent Home Repair Program offers home repair services for low-income homeowners with special needs in Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey counties.

Examples of special needs are the elderly, the disabled, single parents and / or five or more people living in the household. The goal of the Urgent Repair Program is to make repairs and alterations to alleviate poor housing conditions that pose a threat to the homeowner’s health and safety.

Emergency repairs correct life or safety-threatening living conditions such as failing sewage treatment plants, dangerous heating systems or rotten floors. The program can also pay for accessibility changes that allow people to stay in their home after an injury or serious illness. WAMY will begin selecting applicants on Friday, October 15th.

Founded in 1964, WAMY is a community action agency and was the first not-for-profit, non-profit organization to come to the four counties of the High Country. WAMY’s mission is to work with families and communities to provide disadvantaged people with the support they need to become self-sufficient. WAMY conducts a needs assessment of the community every three years and the programs are designed according to the needs of the community. WAMY currently has four programs – Youth Development, Nutrition and Nutrition, Housing and Energy, and Whole Family Development.
