Water authority offers tips to avoid frozen pipes

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – As sub-freezing temperatures threaten parts of the state, the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Authority is reminding customers that it is time to prepare for winter.

To avoid frozen pipes, the authority gave the following tips:

  • Disconnect the outdoor hoses and turn off the sprinkler system
  • Insulate pipes and faucets in unheated areas
  • Seal access doors, vents and cracks
  • If necessary, find the main shut-off valve to use

They also remind people that landscapes require less water during the winter months. It is recommended to water once a week in November, but not to water when it rains or snows. There are also no daytime watering restrictions from November 1st to April 1st.
