Water company says have an action plan to prevent frozen pipes

Water departments want you to have a plan to prevent or manage pipe freezing. Illinois American Water spokeswoman Karen Cotton says you should know where to turn off the water if a pipe freezes. Leave it off until the pipe has thawed, then slowly turn it on to inspect for leaks. If you’re lucky, you won’t have to fix anything.

There are a few ways to keep the pipe from freezing. Foam insulating sleeves can be put on. Sometimes warm air can be let into a crawl space or closet where the plumbing is located. And if it’s very cold, you can run a thin stream of water, because moving water doesn’t freeze.
