Water restrictions lifted in Waterloo region after pipe repair finishes ahead of schedule

The water is flowing again after repairs to a pipeline that supplies 20 percent of Waterloo Region's drinking water were completed ahead of schedule.

Residents of Waterloo Region were asked to reduce their water consumption starting Monday as a pipe at the Mannheim water treatment plant needed to be repaired.

Mari MacNeil, the region's water and sewer services director, said water had to be turned off to urgently repair a coupling along the line.

“We successfully completed the water main repair ahead of schedule, allowing us to lift water restrictions,” MacNeil said in a news release sent Thursday.

“We really want to thank everyone in Waterloo Region who has reduced their water usage. It has had a really positive impact on our supply.”

Crews have been working around the clock since Monday to make repairs. In the meantime, residents have been asked to reduce their non-essential water use, such as watering lawns and washing their vehicles, and have been encouraged to take shorter showers and turn off the water tap when brushing teeth.

The work was originally supposed to last until Sunday.
