Westmeath councillor criticises county’s omission from septic tank scheme

A Westmeath councilor has criticized the Housing Department for failing to take the whole county into account in its new septic tank grant scheme.

Cllr Paul Hogan described the government's approach as discriminatory towards rural Westmeath residents who want to upgrade their septic tanks. Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien announced last November that the grant available for septic tanks would be increased from €5,000 to €12,000. Meanwhile, the grants have been welcomed across Leitrim, where locals continue to face difficulties building housing.
