Why homeowners should check their plumbing system in the fall – WISH-TV | Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather

Is your home ready for the coming cold? Lance Smith, owner of LD Smith Plumbing, teamed up with us today to share a few fall plumbing installation tips that you can do in mild temperatures.

Fall is a great time to check your pipes, faucets, and other plumbing fixtures to make sure your home is ready for cold weather. Now is the time to go outside and have a good look at the outdoor installations while the weather is sunny and temperatures are mild.

Five sanitary tips for autumn:

1. Check your water heater

If it’s over 10 years old, now is the time to consider replacing it to guarantee warm water. To save energy, set the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees.

2. Disconnect the outside water hose

This prevents pipes from freezing and damaging your plumbing during the winter months.

3. Plan for major duct or sewer repairs

Nobody wants to replace sewer pipes in winter. It’s no fun. Temperatures affect your sewer pipes. Even if you just have a small crack in your pipe, sub-zero temperatures can be a bigger problem if left untreated, e.g. B. a flooded house or a blockage. If you have sewer pipe concerns, schedule an inspection to find leaks or cracks and address those issues to make sure your pipes are winter safe.

4. Make it easy for yourself to access your shut-off valve

This is very important for homeowners, especially if you have winter vacation plans. The shut-off valve turns off the flow of water to your home to prevent significant damage to your home in the event of a severe frost or flood while you are away. Make sure you know the exact location of your shut-off valve and have a plan for how to access it in heavy snow.

5. Check all pipes

Examine all of the pipes in your home to make sure they are in an air-conditioned area and that the crawl space openings are closed. Also, make sure that no paneling or insulation has been removed or damaged that would let in cold air.

NOTE: LD Smith Plumbing offers a $ 89 annual plumbing protection plan to ensure pipes and all plumbing are working properly.
