With view to end flooding, GMDA to de-silt old sewer lines using new tech

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) on Tuesday during the 56th meeting of its weekly core planning cell (CPC) approved a proposal to desludge sewers and strengthen them with cured-in-place pipe liners (CIPP), officials said.

The city has been divided into four zones and proposals for zonal desludging projects have also been submitted, officials said.

The GMDA will also explore the possibility of setting up an internal CCTV camera surveillance system for real-time inspection of sewage-related works to better assess the ground situation, they added.

The CIPP lining is a method for trenchless rehabilitation and rehabilitation of existing pipelines. Officials said sewer lines become damaged over time due to the emission of gases and other chemicals. To reinforce these damaged sewers, CIPP technology will be used, they said.

GMDA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sudhir Rajpal said that various proposals for desludging the main sewers have been put forward by the Infra-2 department to ensure sludge-free sewers in the city and prevent sewage overflow due to clogged pipes .

“The Infra-2 Department has been instructed to ensure that adequate measures are taken to build a well-connected drainage network to address concerns about waterlogging in the city during the monsoon,” Rajpal said.

Rajpal instructed officials to ensure that regular checks are carried out to ensure that no main sewers are closed, covered or reduced in width to allow rainwater to flow freely and flood the streets.

The CEO went on to say that measures to ensure a clear and unobstructed network of main sewer and drainage lines in the city have been taken by the GMDA and several proposals were approved on Tuesday. “Areas that require immediate attention are being investigated and our teams have been directed to prioritize water accumulation issues in areas such as Narsingpur, Rajiv Chowk and Khandsa Chowk,” he said.

The Proposals for Desludging Main Sewers along Sectors 48/49 along Sohna Road, Sectors 49/66, 30/31, 40/41, 56/67, 46/47, 43/53, 44/52, 45/52, 51/52, 46/51, 21/22, 22/23 and 23/23A along Mayfield Garden have been approved, officials said.

Officials said teams will also conduct CCTV surveys in Sectors 1, 2 and 3 of Palam Vihar to address complaints of overflowing sewers.
