Patna: Two labourers died of asphyxiation in a septic tank in Barka village, Mirganj, Gopalganj district on Saturday. The victims were identified as Ranjan Ram (25) and Pawan Mahto (22), residents of Turkaha village in Phulwaria. Both had gone to the house of one Aslam Mian to remove the ring of a newly constructed toilet cistern, an official of Mirganj police station said, adding, “The two entered the toilet cistern to remove the ring and suffocated to death.” On receiving the information, police reached the scene, recovered their bodies and sent them to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem. Mirganj SHO Kishori Choudhary said, “Ranjan went inside first but he immediately screamed for help as he entered. Pawan then went to rescue Ranjan but he too fainted due to insufficient oxygen in the cistern. The house owner then informed the police.” He added that the families of the victims have been provided assistance of Rs 23,000 under the Family Assistance Scheme and the Kabir Anteyashti Yojana.
