One of the surest ways to ruin your morning is to wake up to find frozen pipes. Not only does that mean you don't have water to make a cup of coffee, but it can also cause severe flooding and damage to your home. “It's happened to me,” Gale Ketteler, the public information officer for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities, said in a Zoom call with WXII 12 News. Last year, she hadn't prepared for freezing pipes and woke up to find her water wasn't running. “I really had to figure out what the problem was,” Ketteler said. She looked under the sink and then in the garage. Eventually, her family used a space heater for a few minutes to thaw out a pipe in the garage. Although we think we're safe from frozen pipes here in North Carolina, the opposite is true. In fact, pipes burst more frequently in the South. That's because North Carolina contractors often build homes without protecting pipes from freezing temperatures, according to the North Carolina Consumers Council.
