You’ve been cleaning your sink all wrong

Finding new ways to do the tasks we hate can make them seem more bearable – and we can certainly thank TikTok for offering new and improved methods.

However, one professional cleaner has warned of a viral trend where people pour bleach down sewers to keep it pristine – and revealed what we should be doing instead.

In a now viral post, user Vanesa Amaro showed how she pours “a lot” of dish soap and “quite a lot” of bleach down the drain of her kitchen sink to clean it.

Then she turns on her hot water and scrubs the sink a little before rinsing everything out thoroughly.

Other TikTok users have used the same cleaning method for their own kitchen sinks. Many admit that they often forget to clean the drain.

“I literally just got up and cleaned mine,” commented one TikToker.

“Thanks for the reminder. It’s one of those tasks that gets overlooked because I don’t see the mess.”

“Omg, thank you girl,” wrote another, “after that I just cleaned my sink. Thank you again!”

Other videos featuring similar hacks for cleaning drains with bleach have also caused a stir on TikTok, and it quickly became the method of choice.

However, according to professional cleaner Bailey Carson, pouring bleach down the drain is quite dangerous and it could do more harm than good.

“Don’t try this at home!” Bailey told Insider that if mixed with bleach, any chemicals left in the drain would cause a chemical reaction that produced toxic fumes.

Vinegar and dish soap are a good combination, but avoid bleach

While vinegar and dish soap are a popular and safe cleaning combination, dish soap and bleach isn’t, Bailey said.

According to the publication, dish soap often contains ammonia, which when mixed with bleach can release toxic chloramine gas.

“While being fatal may not be enough, it is best to avoid that risk,” he warned.

Fortunately, there are safer ways to get a super clean drain, and dish soap is still a great option.

He says using a few dashes of boiling water will melt away any accumulated fat.

Another option might be to use bicarbonate made from soda and vinegar to clog the drain with ease.
